UGD is part of the UDP-glucose/GDP-mannose dehydrogenase family. UGD transfers UDP-glucose to UDP-glucuronate and reducing NAD+ to NADH. It may be therefore used as a precursor for the enzymatic synthesis of glycosaminoglycans such as hyaluronan, chondroitin sulfate, and heparan sulfate.

Enzyme/substrate ratio should be in the range of 0.04 U/25-80 μg.
One unit will produce 1.0 µmole of UDP-Glucuronic Acid and NAD+ Acid per minute at pH 9.0 at 37ºC using UDP-Glucose and NADH as a substrate.
